Nature in Funchal

As the capital of Madeira, Funchal features a variety of green spaces, viewpoints and unique moments that call for perfect contact, rare and pure with the natural surroundings. Breathe fresh air, I never had so much expression in Funchal.

RESERVA NATURAL PARCIAL DO GARAJAU

Partial Natural Reserve of Garajau – established in 1986, it consists of a fauna and a very diverse flora. You can see large fish, such as Mero (guaza Epinephalus) and Manta and manta rays (Manta birostris, Mobula mobular). The fish passivity, that are accustomed to human presence, allows divers swim at your side, capturing great photographic moments. This protected area is prohibited fishing activity and navigation is conditional.

Viewpoint of Santa Catarina Park – the Parque de Santa Catarina, you can enjoy a view that goes from the bay of Funchal to Ponta do Garajau, in the town of Canico. It is open every day in summer from 7h00 to 21h00 and in winter from 8h00 to 19h00.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden – Quinta Monte Palace, it has about 100 000 plant species, which highlights the collection of cycads (encephalartos), by their age, are considered living fossils. This garden has examples of flora from Madeira and the rest of the world, accompanied by a lake and a stream which harbor fish and birds. They are also works of art and an auditorium that allows the realization of cultural activities.

JARDIM MUNICIPAL DO FUNCHAL

Santa Catarina Park – overlooking the harbor of Funchal, this is surrounded by tree species from all over the world and has a view of the bay of Funchal to Ponta do Garajau. JARDIM DA AJUDA

Garden Santa Luzia – is built on the grounds of the old sugar mill Hinton / Turret, having preserved the chimney of the old factory and some machinery, accompanying the whole garden of Laurel, Garden of the Terraces, Water Garden Tropical Garden and Amphitheatre Garden. In this garden was awarded an honorable mention in the National Prize of Landscape Architecture in the category of Public Use of Outer Space, designed by landscape architect Luis Paulo Ribeiro – TOPIARIS. It is open Monday to Sunday from 8h00 to 24h00.

JARDIM DE SANTA LUZIA

Garden Almirante Reis – in Historic Santa Maria, near the cable car station that connects Funchal to Monte, it is divided into several gardens and rolling platforms with pedestrian paths, accompanied by park benches and artificial lighting.

Gazebo Garden Vila Guida – a garden and gazebo that provides a view of the bay of Funchal. This was built in 1938 and is divided into two levels, the higher is the viewpoint and the lower boasts a gardened area with several large trees, with a great landscape value.

Orchid Garden – contains more than 50 000 plants, among which stands out the orchids from their natural shape to hybrids. This provides a breeding work in the laboratory, where their plants develop throughout the year. This is open Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00, ending December 25.
